Why my dad is a hero
By Victoria, age 6 19
So background, my dad is a teacher — well, technically an Ed Tech, he works one-on-one with kids who have learning disabilities or behavioral disorders and who need extra help outside the classroom. Mostly he teaches them reading skills, math, and chess (seriously he has an army of elementary-school chess players who beat ME but I digress). A lot of the kids have single moms, including one girl, Mikayla (not her real name). It was Mikayla’s birthday this week and my dad asked someone - I’m not sure if it was Mikayla or her mom - whether the mom was going to bring in cupcakes to the classroom for her birthday, which is apparently a thing at the school. The answer was a wavery “maybe, I don’t know” - single mom, not a lot to spend on cupcakes, etc.
So my dad brings in homemade strawberry shortcakes for the class. And because it turns out one kid is allergic to strawberries, he brought blueberry ones too.
And then Mikayla’s mom ended up bringing in cupcakes ANYWAY but then my dad said “two is better than zero. That’s good math.”
MY DAD, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
